There is so much more to Coney Island than the beach, rides, and Nathan’s hot dogs. After Hurricane Sandy wrecked the area in October of last year, the community in Coney Island has struggled to get back on its feet again. Though flood waters shut down businesses and destroyed homes, the residents of C.I. are still on their grind, and definitely still on their bullshit. Coney is something like the Wild, Wild East if there was ever such a thing, and it definitely turns into a different place when the beach-goers and tourists aren’t mobbing the streets. Meet Nems, an emcee and self-proclaimed “gunther hunter” who reps Coney Island to the fullest…and also has one of the most impressive Coney Island-themed tattoos we’ve ever seen. He spoke to us about his upcoming Fuck Your Love EP, life in Coney Island, and how Hurricane Sandy left its mark.

Brooklyn Bullshit: What’s your name?
Nems: Nems.

BKBS: Where in Brooklyn are you from?
Nems: Killa Coney Island.

BKBS: What’s your occupation?
Nems: Gunther hunter.

BKBS: Define a “gunther.”
Nems: A gunther is a hoe, a slut, a no good female that’s promiscuous.

BKBS: Can a gunther be a guy?
Nems: Yeah, a dude that’s a gunther, is a dunther [laughs].

BKBS: Tell me about your music.
Nems: I’m working on a new project called Fuck Your Love. FYL is my crew, Fuck Your Lyfe, so we just flipped it around. It’s basically an EP, about eight songs, of all real music. Trying to switch it up from my usual, like talking about kicking babies and fucking your life, and gunthers. I took a more real approach with this. Stuff I’ve been through, my life lessons.

BKBS: So they’ll learn a lot about you as a person on this record?
Nems: If we market this and promote it right it could be a real game changer. I have a squad of FYL producers that make bangin beats and music in general. Features? No features at all. It’s too personal for that.

BKBS: What’s one of the craziest things you’ve seen while out in Coney?
Nems: Murders was a regular scene out there. I’ve seen so many it doesn’t even constitute as a crazy thing anymore. Crazy? The people, man. They just do the craziest shit. It’s a regular occurrence out there. If you were to walk through three or four years ago, I probably would have been the craziest thing you’ve seen in Coney Island.

BKBS: You are certainly on your Brooklyn bullshit. Tell me about the Gunthersodes you do?
Nems: I like to have fun. I go outside and run into all types of crazy fucking weirdos in Brooklyn, all day every day. Luckily I just have my camera on me and I ask them stupid fucking questions, and they’re stupid enough to answer and get put on YouTube.

BKBS: How did Hurricane Sandy impact your life?
Nems: I lost my vehicle. The projects all lost power. A couple family members owned businesses out there that are no longer there. A lot of friends had apartments that were ground level and lost it all. Coney Island was devastated by Sandy and the mainstream media didn’t pay attention to Coney Island because the first couple of days there were a lot of looting. They focused on the negative, and once a couple of days passed and the story was old news, they forgot about Coney Island. Even the Red Cross forgot about Coney Island, that’s why I’ll never donate to them. They didn’t do anything for one of the worst areas hit in New York. Slowly but surely we’re getting back. FEMA didn’t do shit, they were just giving loans and a lot of people couldn’t afford it. We are still recovering right now.

BKBS: Are things pretty much back to what they used to be out there?
Nems: No. It’s about 80% there. There are still a lot of small businesses that were lost and aren’t coming back.

BKBS: Is there one in particular you were sad to see go?
Nems: My aunt owned a beauty salon on W. 15th St. and Neptune Ave. Neptune was the farthest from the beach and it still got wiped out. When she went to get it back and fix it up, the landlord raised the rent and it wasn’t a good business opportunity anymore to have the location there.

BKBS: Let’s say someone wanted to spend the day in Coney Island, how would you tell them to spend their day?
Nems: Well of course, Nathan’s. That’s the world famous spot. As soon as you get off the train it’s right there. Spend the daytime on the beach, maybe hit the rides in the early evening. Then get your ass the fuck out of there because you don’t wanna be there at night.

BKBS: What’s your favorite ride at the amusement park?
Nems: It used to be the jumbo jet, but that’s not there anymore. My suggestion is to stay away from the Cyclone, because you’ll catch whiplash. You’ll be fucked up. They got all new rides now…I guess the Wonderwheel is cool. You could take a girl up there, make out with her, do whatever you want with her [laughs].

BKBS: Let’s say you were stranded on an island and you could have three items with you that remind you of home, what would they be?
Nems: A box cutter. A loosie, a Newport 100. And a grain of sand from Coney Island.
